What Is Burnout?

Occupational burnout a special type of job stress.

It’s a state of physical, emotional or mental exhaustion combined with doubts about your competence and the value of your work.

It even threatens your personal identity.

People experiencing burnout often have thoughts like:

  • There will never be enough time to do the things that truly matter to me

  • I feel as if I had a sense of purpose at the beginning of my career, but now, it’s been beaten out of me

  • The stress of work is interfering with my personal relationships

  • I feel overwhelmed by the demands on my time

  • I don’t feel as successful as other people seem to think I am

  • I should be better at the demands at work than I am

How does the burnout cycle begin?

It is common for hard-driving, high-achieving professionals to feel the stress and keep pushing through.

You think to yourself..."I've done it before, I can do it again."

But what happens if you can't?

The Mayo Clinic suggests asking yourself the following questions if you think you may be experiencing burnout symptoms:

  • Have you become cynical or critical at work?

  • Do you drag yourself to work and have trouble getting started once you arrive?

  • Have you become irritable or impatient with co-workers, customers or clients?

  • Do you lack the energy to be consistently productive?

  • Do you lack satisfaction from your achievements?

  • Do you feel disillusioned about your job?

  • Are you using food, drugs or alcohol to feel better or to simply not feel?

  • Have your sleep habits or appetite changed?

  • Are you troubled by unexplained headaches, backaches or other physical complaints?

If you have said yes to any of these you may be experiencing job burnout.
